Women and Girls Protection Project (WAGAR)

2019 – 2023

WAGAR gave refugee women and girls the opportunity and a safe space to share their experiences, including concerns about their mental health, gender-based violence (GBV), and personal and social problems.

WAGAR case coordinators provided case-specific support: professional counselling and mental health support, group support sessions, emergency funding, and referrals to relevant partners.

WAGAR also ran training on GBV, human rights, women’s empowerment, community engagement, livelihood, health, hygiene, language, networking and personal advocacy. Male allies could join capacity-building sessions to become better advocates for community-based protection of women and girls, particularly against exploitation.

Enabling Men through Accountable Practices (EMAP)

2023

EMAP is an intervention and prevention programme created by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), guided by the voices of women. It provides staff in humanitarian settings with an evidence-based curriculum and a field-tested approach to engaging men in transformative behavioural change.

The programme is not designed as a stand-alone intervention; it includes organisational efforts to address violence against women and girls. Facilitators are selected from refugee communities and are trained and supported to conduct sessions within their own communities.

MSRI Emergency Fund (MEF) — status unconfirmed

MSRI previously described an Emergency Fund providing funding for emergency cases faced by refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia. MSRI has not been able to confirm to us whether it is still disbursing, so its current status is unknown and no figures are presented for it.

If you are a funder considering this area of work, please ask MSRI directly about the fund’s current position.
