Using this website
What we have done to make this site usable by everyone, and where we know it still falls short.
Our commitment
MSRI serves people who are displaced, marginalised or excluded from services. A website that only works for some visitors would contradict that purpose, so accessibility is treated as a requirement rather than an enhancement.
This site is designed and built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.
How the site is built
- Semantic HTML throughout: one main landmark per page, ordered headings, and lists marked up as lists.
- Every page starts with a skip link that jumps directly to the main content.
- All interactive elements are reachable and operable with a keyboard alone, including the navigation menu and mobile drawer.
- Text and interactive elements meet or exceed the WCAG AA contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against their background.
- Form fields have explicit, permanently visible labels — never placeholder text used as a label. Errors are announced and tied to the field they belong to.
- Images carry descriptive alternative text, or are marked as decorative so they are ignored by assistive technology.
- Motion is limited to a single subtle fade. It is disabled entirely for visitors who set a reduced-motion preference.
- The site works without JavaScript for reading; the publication filters and mobile menu are enhancements rather than requirements.
- Pages are usable at 200% zoom and at 320 pixels wide without horizontal scrolling.
What we know is not perfect
We would rather tell you where the gaps are than claim full compliance.
- Some photographs were supplied by MSRI at low resolution. Where an image is unclear, its alternative text carries the meaning instead.
- Publications and other documents are PDFs hosted on MSRI’s existing website. Those files predate this redesign and we cannot guarantee that they are tagged or screen-reader accessible. If you need a document in another format, ask us and we will provide it.
- The site has been tested with automated tooling and manually with a keyboard. It has not yet been tested with every screen reader and browser combination; that testing is ongoing.
Telling us about a problem
If any part of this site is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us. Describe the page and what happened, and we will fix it. We will also provide the information you needed in another format while we do.
