What we do

Our programmes

MSRI states seven areas of focus for its work. Two programmes are running today, delivered through grassroots projects and partnerships — including as a UNHCR implementing partner since 2011. Completed programmes are recorded separately below.

Who we serve

Refugee and asylum-seeker families, alongside Malaysian households

MSRI works with refugee and asylum-seeker communities whose countries of origin lie in the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa — more than 20 different refugee communities in total, including people from Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. The Institute also assists low-income and marginalised Malaysian families.

Historical initiatives

Work that has ended, documented rather than deleted

Two of MSRI’s most substantial programmes have closed. The Sahabat Health Programme ran from 2013 to 2020, and the Elham Empowerment Programme from 2018 to 2020. They are recorded here with their date ranges so that the Institute’s record is complete — and clearly distinguished from what runs today.

On programme status

Programme dates and statuses on this site reproduce what MSRI publishes. Where a programme’s current status is unclear from MSRI’s own materials, we say so on the programme page rather than inferring it.

Fund a programme

Every programme on this page has a published scope and reported results. If you would like to fund a specific area of work, contact us and we will tell you what it costs and what it delivers.
