Our impact, and how to read it

Every figure on this page is one MSRI has published, shown with the reporting period it belongs to. We do not present history as current results, and we do not add figures together.

Headline figures

These are the four counters MSRI publishes on its website. Two of them carry no stated reporting period, which we say plainly rather than guess.

Methodology

Our rules for reporting numbers

Published figures are the most recent MSRI has made public and reflect the reporting periods stated alongside each number. They are point-in-time figures, not cumulative totals. Please contact us for the latest verified data.

  1. Rule 1

Figures are point-in-time snapshots reported by MSRI. They are not an annual series and should not be added together or read as cumulative totals.
  2. Rule 2

Where MSRI has stated a reporting period, it is shown alongside the figure. Where MSRI has not, this is stated explicitly rather than estimated.
  3. Rule 3

Counts of “registered clients” describe people registered with MSRI. They are not the same as the number of people who received a service in a given period.
  4. Rule 4

All figures on this site reproduce what MSRI has published. None are modelled, projected or inferred.

Resourcing

How the Institute is resourced

Donors and grantmakers routinely ask how an organisation is staffed. MSRI reports a small employed team supported by refugee teachers, project personnel, volunteers and international interns.

  • Research and publication on current socio-economic issues

  • Intellectual discourse through seminars, conferences and forums

  • Partnership and collaboration with local and international agencies

  • Action research on education for displaced and marginalised children in urban settings, covering trauma management, learning motivation, curriculum effectiveness, assessment instruments, teacher capacity building, e-learning effectiveness, and parental engagement

What we have not published

An honest gap list is more useful to a funder than a plausible-looking estimate. These are the documents and figures MSRI has not made public, and which we have therefore not put on this site.

  • Audited financial statements for recent years are not published on the website, and none were located in public sources. MSRI can provide these on request.

  • A comprehensive annual impact report is not published. The figures above are drawn from individual programme pages, the homepage, and a factsheet covering 2021 to the first half of 2022.

  • Current enrolment, client and distribution figures have not been published since those materials. The reporting periods shown here are the most recent MSRI has made public.

  • Expenditure by programme is not published.

  • The full list of institutional grantors and funders is not published.

On our tax-exempt status

MSRI states that all cash donations are tax-deductible under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967, effective until 31 December 2026 (Ref. LHDN.AG.600-12/1/4-6.7194).

Section 44(6) approvals are time-limited and must be renewed. We were not able to independently verify the current approval from public sources when this site was built. If you need this for your own filing, please ask us for the current LHDN approval letter.

Fund work with published results

Every figure on this page comes with its reporting period. If you want more detail before committing, ask — we would rather answer questions than overstate a number.
